The usual way for people who want to study in Germany, but don’t have a direct university entrance qualification (HZB) is to visit a Studienkolleg. There are a few universities which have their own preparatory programs as an alternative way to access their degree programs, especially for refugees.
Usually, they offer
- German courses that prepare students for the university-level German exam,
- preparatory/introductory courses in certain subjects,
- general courses on the educational system, academic learning etc.,
- a buddy program,
- and student counselling.
Sometimes you can also start some regular courses from the degree-programs while you are in the preparatory program. That way, you can take parts of the actual study program already, while you prepare your university application. After successfully finishing the preparatory program there is usually an exam. If successfully completed, you may be able to transfer to the actual degree studies at the same university.
There are some other advantages of these university-internal preparatory programs:
- the course will fit perfectly to the contents of the specific study program
- students might have a higher chance and certainty of getting a place in a degree program at the same uni afterwards
But keep in mind: If you complete one of these special preparatory programs, you might only be able to apply for a specific degree program at the same university. In some cases, you will not receive a general university entrance qualification (HZB) for other unis. Please always contact the study counseling/ student services department of the universities for a personal consultation before you apply.
A lot of these programs are free of charge for refugees.
We created a list of a selection of these programs. It can help you to find one for yourself. You should also search for more programs like this.
